There is good business and there is bad business.
It is bad business when
- the government picks winners and losers
- the government makes entrepreneurialism difficult
- the government takes peoples’ money and gives it to politically favored groups
- the business itself is immoral (e.g., kidnapping, prostitution…)
Consider the barriers to you providing education to Ogden’s youth
- The government is picking your competitor to be a guaranteed winner (i.e., Ogden School District, OSD)
- People are forced by the government to pay for your competitor, but not for you
- Even though your competitor does a poor job (>75% of the kids perform at below grade level proficiency in math), your competitor does not suffer a loss in market share for his poor results and you gain precious little advantage
